Forbes Gentleman

Robert Forbes Gentleman (Forbes)

I was cleaning out a drawer the other day and I came across Forbes funeral service sheet. He died in 2005. He was quite a character in Motherwell for many years and was well noted for his achievements in the world of water polo. I think it was his son, Allan, who read out this touching dirge that Forbes asked for at his final farewell.

Miss me, but let me go.

Miss me, but let me go

When I come to the end of the road

And the sun has set for me,

I want no rites in a gloom filled room,

Why cry for a soul set free,

Miss me a little--but not too long,

And not with your head bowed low,

Remember the love that we once shared,

Miss me a little but let me go,

For this is a journey that we all must take

And each must go alone

It's a step in the master's plan

A step in the road to home

When you are lonely and sick of heart

Go to the friends we know

And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds

Miss me a little but let me go,

I thank you for the love you each have shown

but now it's time to travel alone

Though you can't touch me, I'll be here.

And if you listen within your heart you'll hear,

All the love around you soft and clear

And then you must come this way alone

I'll greet you with a smile and say "Welcome Home"
